A retired Los Angeles police officer charged with workers' compensation fraud and related felonies is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.

Terry Johns (dob 2/25/62) of Corona faces three counts each of workers' compensation insurance fraud and attempted perjury and two counts of insurance fraud in case BA465982. The felony charges include allegations of taking property valued between $100,000 and $500,000 and theft of more than $100,000.

Johns is scheduled to be arraigned in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. The case was filed on March 7.

Deputy District Attorney Arunas Sodonis of the Healthcare Fraud Division said Johns received partial or total disability benefits for work-related injuries at the Los Angeles Police Department from 2014 to 2016. During that time, Johns was participating in the city's Deferred Retirement Option Plan, which allowed him to receive pension payments while also receiving regular pay and benefits as a full-time employee until his retirement in August 2016, the prosecutor said.

However, Johns is accused of knowingly engaging in physical activities inconsistent with his claimed injury while off work on disability. Johns allegedly lied about his activities under oath during a deposition and about his health to a physician.

Johns was released on $160,000 bail in Riverside County. He faces a maximum possible sentence of 12 years and six months in state prison if convicted as charged.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Operations Division, Workers' Compensation Fraud Unit.
