Two men were charged today with murder for a fatal beating outside a Hollywood nightclub over the weekend, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.
Dietrich Canterberry (12/20/81) and Cordell Shields (3/25/81) were each charged in case BA451429 with one count of murder. Shields also faces one count each of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and battery. Both men are expected to be arraigned today in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.
At about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 30, a dispute erupted outside a nightclub near Hollywood and Cahuenga boulevards. Shields is accused of punching Laporscha Marks in the face as she tried to get into a car.
Prosecutors said her brother, Devion Jelkes, was running toward his sister when he was allegedly attacked by defendants. Jelkes was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.
If convicted as charged, Shields faces 26 years to life in state prison, while Canterberry faces a possible 25-to-life term.
The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
