A 33-year-old man accused of robbing a Venice convenience store was charged today with additional felonies, including attempted murder, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.

In an amended criminal complaint, Redmond James O'Neal (dob 1/30/85) faces six felony counts: one count each of attempted murder, second-degree robbery and criminal threats; and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with, a knife, a broken glass bottle, and a stabbing device.

O'Neal also is charged with six misdemeanor counts: one count each of possession of smoking device, possession of injection and ingestion device, battery and exhibiting a deadly weapon; and two counts of possessing a controlled substance, methamphetamine.

The complaint includes special allegations of use of a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the commission of the robbery and inflicting great bodily injury.

The charging document also alleges O'Neal was previously convicted of possession of a controlled substance in jail in 2009 and possession of a firearm by a felon in 2015.

The next court date in case SA097989 is scheduled for July 20 in Department 95 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The alleged crime spree began in the Palms area on May 2, when O'Neal purportedly hit a man and then attempted to stab him with a glass bottle. The next day, the defendant reportedly punched another man in the same vicinity, prosecutors said.

On May 4, O'Neal allegedly stabbed another man and stabbed a fourth man multiple times in unrelated separate attacks, both in Venice. Three days later, the defendant allegedly went on to threaten a Venice Beach coffee shop employee.

The next day, prosecutors said he armed himself with a knife, entered a convenience store in Venice and demanded cash from the clerk.

O'Neal faces a possible maximum sentence of 22 years in state prison if convicted as charged. Bail is set at more than $1.31 million.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, Pacific Division.
