A 30-year-old man pleaded no contest today to killing his girlfriend and shooting the couple's child in their home a year ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Abigail Baron said Juan Antonio Rodriguez of Compton entered the plea to one felony count each of second-degree murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

Rodriguez was immediately sentenced to 24 years to life in state prison.

According to testimony at the preliminary hearing, the defendant and Mayra Portillo, 29, were in a long-term relationship and shared three children.

Late in the evening of April 21, 2018, the couple began arguing. During the exchange, Rodriguez pulled out a gun and shot at his girlfriend several times, fatally striking Portillo and also hitting his 8-year-old daughter in the head, the prosecutor said.

The daughter survived but is disabled as a result of the injury. The couple's other two children were not hurt during the violent assault, the prosecutor added.

Case TA145891 was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
