A 29-year-old man was sentenced today to nine years in state prison for getting into a physical altercation with a family member that resulted in a death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.

On Aug. 30, Ramon Velasquez Jr. of Compton pleaded no contest to a felony count of assault likely to produce great bodily injury in case TA139006.

In addition to the prison sentence, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge John J. Cheroske also ordered Velasquez to pay restitution in the amount of $9,126 to the victim's wife.

Deputy District Attorney Marlene Martinez of the Victim Impact Program, who prosecuted the case, said on Jan. 2, Velasquez got into a fight with his aunt's husband, Dennis Clark, at their Compton home.

Following the brawl, Velasquez went to his room and Clark, who was injured, went to his bedroom, the prosecutor said.

The next day, Clark's wife went to check in on him and found him unresponsive on his bedroom floor, the prosecutor added.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and pronounced the victim dead, according to the prosecutor.

The prosecutor said it was later determined that Clark, 41, died from a subdural hematoma.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
