A 30-year-old man was sentenced today to 25 years to life in state prison for fatally shooting another after a party in 2014, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.

At today's court appearance, Thearath Sam of Pomona pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder in case NA098413. The defendant also admitted a special allegation that he personally used a firearm during the commission of the murder.

Deputy District Attorney Hubert Yun, who prosecuted the case, said on the evening of Jan. 20, 2014, Sam was at a party in Long Beach when he got into a confrontation with the victim, Sambo Chhoy, 33.

The two men were told to leave the party and exited into a back alley, the prosecutor said. Sam then followed Chhoy for two blocks and then shot him. The victim died at the scene, the prosecutor added.

A little more than a month later, Sam was arrested in connection with the killing.

The case was investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
