Prosecutors today charged a 27-year-old man with murder in the fatal stabbing of a passenger on a Montebello transit bus after the victim died, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.
Manuel Ortiz Jr. (dob 9/16/90), aka Chubbs, of Montebello faces one felony count of murder in case BA467237. The charge includes an allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, in the commission of the crime, according to the amended criminal complaint.
The defendant is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.
Ortiz is accused of stabbing the 23-year-old man multiple times on the neck and head on April 9 at a bus stop on Whittier Boulevard and Gerhart Avenue in East Los Angeles, said Deputy District Attorney Christina Lutz, who is prosecuting the case. The victim was taken to a local hospital and died weeks later.
If convicted as charged, Ortiz faces a possible maximum sentence of 30 years to life in state prison.
The prosecutor is now recommending bail be set at $2.06 million. The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
