A gang member was sentenced today to 94 years to life in state prison for shooting a man to death as he stood outside of a Redondo Beach home and later writing a song about the murder, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.
On June 28, after three hours of deliberations, a jury found Erick Julian Ortega aka Bonez, 30, guilty of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in case YA087978.
Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Turk said the jury also found true allegations that Ortega committed the crimes in association with a criminal street gang, used a handgun and was convicted in 2005 for making criminal threats and in 2007 for possession for sale of cocaine.
Victim Bobby Reynolds, 38, was shot to death on June 21, 2013, five days after the defendant asked the victim about possible gang affiliation, according to evidence presented at the trial. After killing Reynolds, Ortega fled the state and was arrested in Utah months later, the prosecutor said.
Included in the evidence presented at the trial were the lyrics to a song written by Ortega, containing specific similarities to the murder.
The case was investigated by the Redondo Beach Police Department.
