Two men pleaded not guilty today to fatally attacking a man in Monterey Park last month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.

Moises Garcia (dob 6/3/60) has been charged with one count of murder in case GA101286. The felony complaint includes a special allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the commission of the murder.

The charging document also alleges Moises Garcia has been previously convicted of rape, rape in concert and forcible oral copulation in 1984.

Garcia's co-defendant, Victor Garcia (dob 11/8/61), has been charged with murder and assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury.

Deputy District Attorney Kevin Keeland is assigned to the case.

Prosecutors said on June 10, the two defendants reportedly got into a fight with Michael Anthony Villar, 26. During the altercation, the men allegedly stabbed and assaulted Villar, according to prosecutors.

The victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Following the incident, Moises and Victor Garcia were taken into custody and subsequently charged on June 13.

The two defendants are scheduled to return to court on July 20 for a preliminary hearing setting in Department 5 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Alhambra Branch.

If convicted as charged, Moises Garcia faces a possible maximum sentence of 66 years to life in state prison, while Victor Garcia faces 25 years to life in prison.

The case is being investigated by the Monterey Park Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Homicide Bureau.
