ACCUSED KILLER RETURNED TO MEXICO AFTER EXTRADITION REQUEST
FRESNO, Calif. - United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that ARMANDO REYES ANDRADE, 57, a Mexican national and resident of Riverbank, California, was returned to Mexico yesterday following a Mexican extradition request for him to stand trial for the January 2005 shooting death of Celedonio Leon Tapia in the state of Michoacan.
According to Mexican authorities and a complaint filed in federal court in Fresno, REYES ANDRADE is charged with homicide after allegedly shooting Leon Tapia in the head during a pool hall encounter on January 13, 2005, in Michoacan. REYES ANDRADE allegedly threatened witnesses not to tell anyone and then fled. The Mexican government requested REYES ANDRADE’s arrest and extradition from the United States pursuant to an extradition treaty between the two countries. Following the request, the United States Marshals Service arrested REYES ANDRADE in Riverbank, California (County of Stanislaus), in May 2008. At a court hearing in December 2009, REYES ANDRADE waived any further extradition proceedings and was returned to Mexico yesterday by law enforcement authorities.
“Yesterday’s action exemplifies the kind of law enforcement cooperation our treaties with Mexico make possible,” said United States Attorney Wagner. “By working together, we can ensure that criminals are brought to justice on both sides of the border.”
This case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ian Garriques and Stanley Boone of the Eastern District of California and Trial Attorneys Valinda Jones and Andrea Tisi of the Criminal Division’s Office of International Affairs in Washington, D.C. Assistance was provided by the U.S. Marshals Service.
