A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with a car crash that killed one person and injured another at Hawthorne and Del Amo boulevards in Torrance, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth Dickinson said Monte Lashawn Collins (dob 3/4/98), of Long Beach, faces one felony count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and two felony counts of hit-and-run driving resulting in injury.

Collins also faces five misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage and one misdemeanor count of driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license. The complaint also alleges Collins fled the scene after committing a vehicular manslaughter.

Additionally, case YA097210 charges Karin Taylor Dixson (dob 9/27/98), of Los Angeles, with one felony count of accessory after the fact to a vehicular manslaughter.

Arraignment is scheduled for today in Department 4 of the Los Angeles Superior Court, Torrance Branch.

On Nov. 14, Collins allegedly drove a vehicle at a high rate of speed while weaving in and out of traffic on Hawthorne Boulevard, the prosecutor said. The defendant is charged with then sideswiping a vehicle causing his car to cross the center median into oncoming traffic, colliding into additional vehicles, the prosecutor added.

Collins’ vehicle rolled over ejecting his front seat passenger. The passenger, George Jackson, 20, died as result of his injuries. Dixson also was a passenger in Collins’ vehicle. Collins is accused of fleeing the scene after the crash, the prosecutor said.

Bail for Monte Lashawn Collins is recommended at $200,000 and $25,000 for Dixson.

If convicted as charged, Collins faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 years and four months in state prison and Dixson faces a maximum sentence of three years.

The case remains under investigation by the Torrance Police Department.
