A 33-year-old man was sentenced today to life in state prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend during a domestic violence incident and trying to evade police, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On Jan. 21, a jury found defendant Miguel Roman Gutierrez guilty of three felony counts: premeditated attempted murder, evading an officer and mayhem in case VA134965.

Jurors also found true a special allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the commission of the crime. Additionally, jurors found true that Gutierrez committed great bodily injury upon the victim.

Deputy District Attorney Mariela Torres, who prosecuted the case, said at the time of the crime, Gutierrez was separated from his wife and had a girlfriend he had been dating for three months.

The girlfriend realized Gutierrez was not going to get divorced, the prosecutor said, so she decided to break up with the defendant.

In the early morning of April 30, 2014, the girlfriend broke up with Gutierrez. Following the break up, the two went to the woman’s car and sat inside the vehicle, the prosecutor said.

The  defendant asked the woman if she would return, to which she replied no, the prosecutor said. The defendant exited the car and asked again if the woman would come back. He then had the ex-girlfriend stop the car, the prosecutor said.

At that point, the defendant pulled out a knife and stabbed the ex-girlfriend 11 times in the arms and chest. He also almost severed the victim’s pinky finger, the prosecutor added.

Following the assault, Gutierrez fled the scene and the victim drove a block away and asked a bystander for help. The victim also called 911 for assistance, according to the prosecutor.

After learning about the attack, authorities were able to locate Gutierrez on a red motorcycle and chased after him, but soon lost the defendant, the prosecutor said.

Gutierrez was later located on 54th Street and Loma Vista Avenue in Maywood and subsequently arrested in connection with the crime.

The case was investigated by the Bell Police Department.
