Long Beach Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Fight with Friend

Filed under: California Defense Attorney — fayarfa @ 2:23 am

A 57-year-old man accused of severely beating his friend during a fight pleaded not guilty today, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Riccardo Gonzalez Rangel (dob 12/11/57) of Long Beach has been charged with two felony counts: attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in case NA102089.

The felony complaint includes a special allegation that the defendant used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a milk crate, during the commission of the crime. Additionally, the charging document alleges Rangel inflicted great bodily injury, which led the victim to suffer paralysis and become comatose due to brain injury.

Deputy District Attorney Tapti Patel, who is assigned to the case, said on June 21 Rangel and his friend were at an apartment complex in Long Beach when the two men got into an argument.

At some point, Rangel allegedly hit his friend with a milk crate several times, the prosecutor said. After being struck, the friend fell and hit his head.

Authorities were called and the victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, where he currently remains, the prosecutor said.

The day of the incident, law enforcement interviewed Rangel about the brawl and the defendant was arrested in connection with the attack.

Rangel is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 5 for a prehearing conference in Department S01 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch.

If convicted as charged, Rangel faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison.

The case is being investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
