Prosecutors filed one count of murder today against a man alleged to have beaten to death a Koreatown resident in his apartment, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Roy Lee Adams, 66 (dob 7/18/47), pleaded not guilty today at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Foltz Criminal Justice Center. He is due back in court on Jan. 10, 2014, for a preliminary hearing setting in Department 37.

The complaint, case BA419765, includes an allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a blunt object.

The charging document also includes seven prior felony convictions stemming from Los Angeles County which include various drug related charges, attempted escape from prison, and carrying a loaded unregistered handgun.

Deputy District Attorney John Gilligan said the victim, Cornelius Rich, was found approximately 10 days after his death in March 2013. An apartment manager at the 500 block of Kingsley Drive discovered the body after receiving complaints regarding the smell coming from the apartment, Gilligan added.

If convicted as charged, Adams faces a state prison sentence of 25 years to life. His bail is set at $1 million.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
