VAN NUYS – A 23-year-old man was charged with murder and other felony charges by the District Attorney’s Office today in connection with this week’s heroin injection death of a 13-year-old boy.

Brett Michael Cronin (dob 9-18-1988), who was arrested by Los Angeles police on Wednesday, was expected to appear for arraignment this afternoon in Van Nuys Superior Court Department 100.

Cronin is charged in case No. LA 071676 with one count each of murder, furnishing or administering heroin to a minor and child abuse. Both the drug count and the child abuse counts carry allegations of great bodily injury and that the victim died.

Bail for Cronin was recommended at $1 million. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

The victim, a friend of the defendant’s 14-year-old stepbrother, died on Monday while spending the night at his friend’s home in Woodland Hills. Authorities said the fatal injection was administered after the victim and defendant went into a bathroom at the home.

The case was filed by Deputy District Attorney William Ryder. Prosecuting the case will be Deputy District Attorneys Kaveh Faturechi and Matthew Vodnoy.
