SANTA ANA - A serial rapist registered as a sex offender stemming from a previous child molest conviction was sentenced today to 129 years to life in state prison for sexually assaulting four women in his apartment and surreptitiously videotaping the rapes without the victims’ knowledge or consent.

James Ernest Bledsoe, 30, Huntington Beach, was found guilty by a jury Oct. 20, 2011, of two felony counts each of forcible rape, rape of an unconscious woman who was unable to resist, rape of woman who was unable to resist due to intoxication, sexual penetration by foreign object of a person who was unable to resist due to intoxication, one felony count each of assault with intent to commit sexual assault, forcible oral copulation, oral copulation of an unconscious person who was unable to resist, oral copulation of an intoxicated person, sexual penetration by foreign object by force, and failure to register as a sex offender. He was found guilty of four misdemeanor counts of secretly filming another with the intent to arouse and one misdemeanor count of resisting and obstructing an officer. The jury found true the sentencing enhancements and allegations for committing sex crimes against multiple victims and being a habitual sex offender.  He has a prior 2005 strike conviction for lewd acts on a child, for which he had to register for life as a sex offender.

Jane Doe #1
Bledsoe met Jane Doe #1 approximately two weeks prior to the rape, got her phone number, and the victim later agreed to go out with the defendant on a date.

On the night of Dec. 14, 2007, Bledsoe went to a nightclub in Costa Mesa with 27-year-old Jane Doe #1. After leaving the nightclub, the defendant returned with the victim to his Huntington Beach apartment and went in the community Jacuzzi before returning to Bledsoe’s home.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., Bledsoe turned on a video camera and began recording himself with the victim without Jane Doe #1’s knowledge or consent. The defendant surreptitiously taped consensual sexual acts with the victim, who eventually attempted to stand up and leave. The defendant pulled the victim back onto the bed as she began to cry and ask to be taken home.

The defendant temporarily turned off the camera and forcibly raped Jane Doe #1. He then turned on the camera again and refused to let the victim leave. Jane Doe #1 continued pleading for Bledsoe to let her go and give back her clothes, which the defendant had hidden.

Bledsoe then forcibly orally copulated the victim on video as she told him to stop and struggled to get away. Jane Doe #1 repeatedly told Bledsoe, “You’re scaring me,” and, “You’re hurting me,” as the defendant assaulted her and masturbated in front of her. Bledsoe became angry, punched Jane Doe #1 in the stomach, and yelled at her to get the “f*** out of” his house.

Jane Doe #1 was able to escape and was driven home by a passerby. The victim reported the rape to the Huntington Beach Police Department (HBPD) that day.

The defendant knew HBPD was looking for him because of the rape and attempted to flee the country by parking in San Diego and walking toward the Mexican border. He was stopped on foot by the San Diego Police Department and tried to escape by breaking free and running towards the Mexican border. He was arrested shortly thereafter in San Diego.

During the course of the investigation, HBPD officers discovered additional videos of sexual assaults against other women and identified Jane Doe #2, Jane Doe #3, and Jane Doe #4 as victims. Bledsoe’s DNA was later matched to evidence from the rape examination of Jane Doe #1.

Jane Doe #2
Bledsoe met Jane Doe #2 approximately two weeks prior to the rape, got her phone number, and the victim later agreed to go out with the defendant on a date.

On Oct. 8, 2007, Bledsoe went with 21-year-old Jane Doe #2 to a Huntington Beach bar. The defendant took Jane Doe #2 to his home and turned on a video camera to record himself with the victim without Jane Doe #2’s knowledge or consent.

The defendant videotaped himself raping Jane Doe #2, who may have been drugged without her knowledge and was unable to resist due to intoxication. Jane Doe #2 may have gone in and out of consciousness.

Jane Doe #2 woke up the following morning in Bledsoe’s clothing, sick, and in her own home. The victim only remembered having one drink and did not remember specifically what had happened. She went to the hospital that day and filed a sexual assault report with HBPD, but could not remember being raped or who had sexually assaulted her.

Based on the victim’s report in October 2007, she was identified in December 2007 as one of the victims in Bledsoe’s videos.

Jane Doe #3
Bledsoe met Jane Doe #3 approximately two weeks prior to the rape, got her phone number, and the victim later agreed to go out with the defendant on a date.

On July 15, 2007, Bledsoe took 24-year-old Jane Doe #3 to his apartment after going with her to a Huntington Beach bar.  The victim may have been drugged without her knowledge. The defendant turned on a video camera to record himself with the victim without Jane Doe #3’s knowledge or consent.

Jane Doe #3 was rendered unconscious and was visibly non-responsive on the video. The video shows Bledsoe masturbated next to the victim, digitally penetrated, orally copulated, and raped her while Jane Doe #3 was unconscious and unable to resist.

The victim woke up the following morning and left without knowing or remembering that she had been sexually assaulted.

On July 24, 2007, Parole agents discovered Jane Doe #3’s driver’s license in Bledsoe’s home during a parole search. Based on the discovery and documentation of that driver’s license, Jane Doe #3 was identified in December 2007 as one of the victims in Bledsoe’s videos.

Jane Doe #4
On June 30, 2007, 21-year-old Jane Doe #4 went to a nightclub in Costa Mesa with friends. The victim had two drinks and became sick, passing out at the bar. When she woke up, Bledsoe was standing over her and offered to take her home. Instead of driving the victim to her own home, Bledsoe took Jane Doe #4 to his apartment.

The defendant recorded himself with a video camera sexually assaulting the victim without Jane Doe #4’s knowledge or consent.

The videotape shows that Jane Doe #4 told Bledsoe that she did not want to have sex with him. Bledsoe forcibly raped and forcibly digitally penetrated the victim against her will. Jane Doe #4 was able to leave the following morning and went to the hospital to report the rape.

The victim was unable to identify Bledsoe to police until January 2008, when she saw news coverage and recognized him based on Bledsoe’s arrest for the sexual assault of Jane Doe #1. Bledsoe’s DNA was later matched to evidence from the rape examination of Jane Doe #4.

Victim Impact Statements
During the sentencing today, Jane Doe #4 gave an impact statement to the court and explained that the defendant took away the dreams she had set for her life. She said that while her physical injuries have healed, her emotional wounds remain and she can only try to move on and be strong.

The mother of Jane Doe #2 gave her own victim impact statement and also read one on behalf of her daughter. She explained that Jane Doe #2 has trouble trusting people because of Bledsoe and struggles with constant emotional turmoil.
