VAN NUYS – A man convicted of trying to murder his girlfriend, then barricading himself inside their Tarzana townhouse for nearly 10 hours prior to his arrest was sentenced today to a 35-year-to-life prison term.

Deputy District Attorney Ronda Brody of the Van Nuys office said 40-year-old Jason Dana Paul was sentenced by Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Martin Herscovitz, who presided over the defendant’s trial.

A jury in May convicted Paul of numerous felony crimes including attempted first-degree murder for shooting his girlfriend, assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a machine gun, possession of an assault weapon, possession of a deadly weapon and mayhem. Jurors found true allegations that attempted murder was willful, deliberate and premeditated, and that the defendant personally used a firearm.

Paul was arrested by Los Angeles police on Feb. 28, 2010, following the nearly 10-hour standoff when the defendant barricaded himself inside the couple’s Tarzana townhouse in the 18500 block of Hatteras Street after shooting his girlfriend. Weapons found after the arrest included a machine gun, a 10 mm Coharie Arms Model CA94-10 and a 40-caliber Glock Model 23.

The victim, then 39 years old, was hospitalized, but recovered. She did not appear in court today, but her mother gave an impact statement, Brody said.
