LOS ANGELES – An Inglewood woman was sentenced today to four years in state prison and ordered to pay more than $550,000 in restitution as part of a child care fraud case, the District Attorney’s Office announced.

Evelyn Wade, dob 12/16/1945, pleaded no contest last year to eight counts of grand theft stemming from charges filed against her and eight other defendants in the 2008 dismantling of the fraud ring, said Deputy District Attorney Tamia Hope of the Public Assistance Fraud Division.

Wade, who was immediately remanded by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy to start serving her sentence, was ordered to pay $57,485 to the Los Angeles County Department of Social Services and $495,028 to the Crystal Stairs subsidized child care program.

The case was one of five brought in February 2008 as part of a larger child care fraud crackdown – involving more than 50 defendants. In total, taxpayers lost an estimated $3 million in the alleged schemes.

Wade’s son, Eric Devon Wade, dob 11/12/1972, of Long Beach, was sentenced to four years in state prison last week. He pleaded no contest to the same eight grand theft counts in October 2010. Other codefendants in the Wade case are awaiting sentencing.

The Wades operated Grandma and Grandpa Family Child Care, Inc., and received a license to operate a child care facility in 2000 and began providing child care for parents enrolled in Crystal Stairs, one of 13 subsidized child care programs operating in Los Angeles County.

Prosecutors alleged that the Wades conspired with several parents, many of them relatives, to fraudulently obtain subsidized child care payments. In some cases, child care was never provided and the parents and provider shared the Crystal Stairs money as a kickback.

In addition, prosecutors alleged that parents provided phony employment verification, attempting to justify their need for subsidized child care.
